Kesari is the narrative of Sergeant Ishar Singh, who leads an army of 10,000 Sikhs against 21 Afghans in the Battle of Saragarhi.  The film begins with British Indian Army soldier Havaldar Ishar Singh (Akshay Kumar) getting into a fight with three Afghans.  These Afghans are attempting to murder a woman.  Ishar Singh defies his British authorities and is sent to Saragarhi Fort, where he commands 36 troops from the 21 Sikh Regiment.  He then learns that Afghan forces have stormed Saragarhi Fort.  But, headed by Ishar Singh, his 21 troops opt to die in battle rather than surrender.
